A brand new digitally restored version of the official film for the 1973-74 Whitbread Round the World Race. The official film from the first Whitbread had previously only been available in low resolution, and in an inferior quality transfer from the original film reels. Now for the first time we’re able to share the 40-year-old images in high definition.

  1. The wonderful optimistic tone of the commentator is mellowed by the losses overboard.
The shots of each competing boat at the beginning is great history as I followed the race at the time.
A few years after this HMS Adventure(production Nicholson 55?) was used for sail training and I was luck enough to sail her for a week to the Channel Islands as a Teenager. I remember the steering would reverse if pressed too hard, I assume they did not have the problem during the race.
Interesting to note have many woman or girls as he said were on the race. The 2018 now has returned to mixed crews being encouraged.
    Thanks Warren
